A' Company Cadets parade at Greens Norton

posted 9 Nov 2010 04:20 by Anzio DC   [ updated 9 Nov 2010 04:35 ]

On 30thOctober it was the Battle of Britain memorial and to mark the occasion a parade was held in Greens Norton by the Royal British Legion.  In attendance was the Air Training Corp from Northants and the Beds & Buck’s units, the local Scout band and the Army Cadet Force which was made up of cadets from Kabritt, Anzio and Salamanca detachment.
The day consisted of the parade which started from the local community centre down to the green which was lead by Admiral Sir John Brigstock KCB and Real Admiral John Roberts CB where the service was given by Rev. Hughes.

After the parade it was back to the community centre to man the information / demonstration stand that would give visitors the chance to see what the Army Cadet Force is all about.  Demo’s included Fieldcraft with cooking in the field & basha building, Map & Compass and of course a bit of Drill & Turnout.  Cadets were also lending a hand to the Royal British Legion by selling poppy’s and armbands to the public to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal.

Bob Aran, vice chairman of the Royal British Legion Greens Norton said “The whole event went really well which raised around £1000 for the poppy appeal. It was good to see the Army Cadet attend and take such an active part in the whole event, I’m looking forward to working with you all again in the near future”

The 1st of October seen some moves within the county of LN&R ACF. Major Ian Walton, former OC A Company, has moved on to pastures new. He has become OC B Squadron, moving back to the city of his birth Leicester. We wish Major Ian good luck in his new post.
A Company welcomes Major Chris Doyle as the new Officer Commanding. Chris pictured here, on the right, as OC D Company, receiving the efficiency trophy during annual camp 2010. Chris handed over the reins of D Company to his wife Pip and has moved in to his new office in Gibraltar Barracks Northampton.

My Visit to Connaught, Canada

posted 24 Jun 2010 04:12 by Kabritt DC

Last summer I was given the opportunity of a lifetime; I was lucky enough to be selected to represent the ACF in Canada on the Cadet Leader Instructor Marksman course.  Fourteen of us were chosen to go along with two officers. When we first got there the weather was scorching, which was great considering the week before it hadn’t stopped raining! We were divided up and allocated our tents which slept approximately eight people and living in such close proximity meant that we very soon made friends. For the first few days we were eased into the course, sorting out the rifles and whatnot until we were finally integrated with the Canadian cadets.
There were fifty of us in ‘Alpha’ company altogether, 36 Canadians and 14 from the UK. Unlike our Annual Camp in the UK however, they have staff cadets who do most of the organising and who look after the cadets and there are only a few adults who supervise (but you don’t get to see them very often).
You’d have thought most of our time would have been spent at the range, well it wasn’t. We did spend a few days a week at the range but we also did a lot of other activities. In our first week one day was devoted to a camp sports day complete with an inflatable slip ‘n’ slide and a dunk tank. There were also many other activities, which included sightseeing and shopping at the weekends and even going to a water park. For three days, as part of our course, we had to go on an ‘FTX’ – field training exercise – it wasn’t really a highlight to be honest.
Sleeping in the middle of nowhere, eating ration packs worse than our own, getting bitten endlessly by the hordes of mosquitoes and other insects and then being drenched by torrential rain wasn’t that much fun; although we did have a camp fire and roasted marshmallows.

Here comes the A2 !!

posted 7 Apr 2010 08:14 by Anzio DC   [ updated 7 Apr 2010 08:32 ]

Here comes the A2 !!

In January 2010, LNR Army Cadet Force saw the introduction of the latest bit of hi-tech kit design specifically for the Army Cadet Force;
The L98 A2 Cadet Rifle.

Since January, Cadets from A' Company have been training hard to master this new weapons system, to ensure that we are one of the first Companies in the county to have our cadets assessed to be current and competent on the system.

The new weapon has some striking new changes in comparison to the old weapon. Being a single shot, Gas Operated weapon, the old Cocking handle Assembly has been taken away and in its place is a smaller cocking handle; the shape and design of which helps reduce the amount of stoppages that occur, and increase the Marksmanship capabilities of the weapon for accuracy when target shooting.

Additional to the Gas Parts, the A2 boasts a Flash Eliminator in place of the muzzle. This allows for the attachment of the SBFS (Safe Blank Firing System). With the SBFS fitted to the A2, the tactics and training that the cadets can undertake can be made much more exciting, whilst maintaining the maximum amount of safety.

The L98 A2 is one of the most significant changes in the Army Cadet Force for some 20 years since the introduction of the LSW, and promises some exciting times ahead.

To learn more about the new weapon system, click on the rifle.
(Please note that this trainer is based on the British Army's L85A2, which is similar to the L98A2 but the L98A2 does not have Automatic capability and cannot be fitted with a Bayonet.)

A' Company Cross Country to Victory

posted 9 Mar 2010 06:16 by Anzio DC

It was a cold, blustery and rainy day at our Weekend Training Centre - Yardley Chase, but the Cadets of A' Company braved the conditions with a fantastic turnout for the intercompany Cross Country competion. The Cadets entered groups depending on their age, with the groups ranging of Juniors, Intermediate and Seniors for both boys and girls.

The Stagerred starts to the competiton saw the Juniors our first to run the 5km course around the training area. The Cadets made fantastic times, and the Junior Boy's race was won by our very own Cadet O'Neil of A' Company.

Next out were the intermediates, all of which put in a sterling effort running the very wet and muddy course in good time, with some of them even managing to lose a trainer but still run over the finishing line!!

The final group of the day, the Seniors, and yet another first for A' Company, with Cadet Cpl Reid T. (Salamanca Detachment) crossing the finish line in true style (by slipping on his bottom!!) to achieve a hard fought and well deserved first place!.

The Commandant, Colonel S. Davies presented the Medals at a final parade to the competitors and praised all the entrants for their hard work. Cadets have been selected from the event to go forward to represent the County at the Regional Cross Country Competition.

The officer commanding would like to thank all the Cadets who made the effort to turn up from A' Company to compete in the event. A full list of those who attended will be available on this website soon. Also a big thank you to all of the Adult Instructors in A' Company for turning up to support the event, and in particular to SSI Gilkes, SI Coggin and PAI Brumbill for their fantastic Catering support. The burgers and Hot Drinks were just the ticket!!.

Well Done A' Company !!

Cadet CSM Troop gets a Royal Welcome for Cadet 150

posted 21 Feb 2010 15:03 by Anzio DC

Cadet CSM Troop and 25 other specially selected Cadet Ambassadors spent a day representing the Cadet Forces marking the start of the Cadet 150 Celebrations.

Their day started off by meeting Her Majesty The Queen and HRH Prince Phillip in an audience at Buckingham Palace, shaking hands with Her Majesty and letting her know what LNR ACF had planned for our celebrations. The party then moved onto the Ministry of Defence for a lunch with officials, followed by a brief walk to the infamous 10 Downing Street for a photo shoot.

The Cadets were then suprised by being taken on a guided tour of number 10. Visiting famous rooms such as the Cabinet Room, and sitting around the Cabinet Table. Then it was off to Number 11 Downing Street to be greeted by Mrs Maggie Darling, wife of the Chancellor of the Exchequer for a tour around the Chancellors residence.

Finally onto an evening reception at Lancaster House hosted by the Ulysses Trust and the councils of the RFCA's. Guests included the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, General Sir Nicholas Houghton KCB CBE, and HRH Prince Seeiso, High Commissioner for Lesotho and world famous explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

As Cadet 150 Ambassador for the Eastern Region, Cadet CSM Troop represents all that is good with the Army Cadet Force, and represented A' Company, LNR ACF and the Eastern Region showing Her Majesty just what calibre of young person 150 years of the Cadet Forces can make.

Music Award for A' Company Cadet

posted 30 Nov 2009 06:34 by Anzio DC   [ updated 30 Nov 2009 06:49 ]

In A' Company Corp of Drums, Cadet Scott Fallon (Anzio Detachment) was recently awarded the "Jonny Harris" Trophy for being voted as the "Most Improved Musician".

Cadet Fallon, who has paraded with Anzio Detachment since September 2008, started attending A' Company Corp of Drums in early 2009. He now plays the Side Drum, and is learning other instruments. Cadet Fallon is also a member of the Drum Display when the Corp of Drums Parades, and has attended several Parades including Remembrance Sunday, and played in the "Light Display" (A drum routine played in complete darkness with UV Lights to illuminate only their sticks) at the recent A' Company Mess Dinner.

A' Company Corp of Drums parade every Monday Night from 7.15pm at our Headquarters, Gibraltar Barracks, Barrack Road, Northampton. Parading with the Corp of Drums is additional to a normal Cadet night, and anyone is welcome to join.

As well as being taught how to play new instruments, you can take part in Parades, pass your "Cadet in the Community", study and instrument as the "Skills Section" of your Duke of Edinburgh Award, and study towards a recognised qualification - The BTEC National Award  in Music (the equivalent to an A' Level).

SSI Pitkin (Corp of Drums Commander) and Major Ian Walton (Officer Commanding A' Company) would like to congratulate Cadet Fallon for a fantastic effort. Well done.

A’ Company Cadets Support our Soldiers

posted 26 Nov 2009 04:41 by Anzio DC   [ updated 26 Nov 2009 04:52 ]

The Cutting of paper, tearing of tape, and some early Christmas Cheer... these are the sounds that were ringing out across A' Company this week as cadets from all the detachments pulled together to send shoe box sized Christmas presents out to Afghanistan and Iraq to Support our Soldiers.
Over the past 4 weeks, A' Company has been collecting items for the Support our Soldiers Appeal. From packs of cards to bottles of shower gel, DVD's to books, Sweets to Savoury snacks. The contributions donated by the Cadets and Instructors, friends and family, other local groups and work colleagues all mounted up in an act of generosity and goodwill that will hopefully bring a smile to our troops faces as they are on duty so far away from their families this Christmas.

Yesterday Evening, some of the Contributions were collected together with Anzio Detachment acting as a central hub. Kabritt Detachment, and Company HQ sending over their detachments contributions to be sorted and packed into packages for both Male and Female soldiers alike.
The Cadets from Anzio detachment spent the entire evening adding festive wrapping paper to the boxes, signing greetings on behalf of all cadets from A' Company, and popping letters from Cadets wishing the troops a good Christmas and a safe return home.
Whilst we were packing, members of the local community even travelled over to the detachment to bring along their contributions, a true demonstration of the Cadets working in action with the local community.

Elsewhere during the week Daventry Detachment has also collected and packed their own contribution which is to be taken directly to the Area Coordinators; bringing the total to well over 40 boxes donated to the appeal!
The Area Coordinator for the Support our Soldiers appeal has passed on their thanks for the overwhelming support by A' Company, and informed us that our donations were bound for members of the Grenadier Guards and their support personnel.

The Company Commander, Major Ian Walton said “I would like to thank all Cadets, Instructors and all those who contributed to this appeal for their efforts and a special thank you to Lorraine and Kevin Smith (Parents of Cadet Luke Smith from Anzio Detachment) who helped arrange the appeal and transported the collections to the collection depot in Rugby. It is our hope that together we will bring a little festive joy to those brave Service Men and Women who are giving up their Christmas to bring security to Afghanistan and Iraq.”

A' Company Remembers.....

posted 12 Nov 2009 06:04 by Anzio DC   [ updated 12 Nov 2009 11:19 ]

Over 130 Cadets and Instructors met at Gibraltar Barracks in Northampton to honour and remember all those who have given their lives for the peace and freedom we enjoy today. Sixty more attended other local parades at Daventry and Brackley.

After forming up at their Headquarters, A Company paraded behind the Corps of Drums to the Church of the Holy Sepulchre on Sheep Street. The Church is currently designated the Military Church for Northamptonshire, but it is hoped that this will soon become the Military Church for the entire region.Little is known of our Parade which it is often overshadowed by the main Town Centre Parade but as wall as our Police escort we were accompanied by hundreds of supporting parents, current and ex serving soldiers, friends, family and other members of the public who lined the route and leaned from windows with flags flying to cheer the cadets on.

A full church participated in the Service of Remembrance, made ever more poignant for us, following the sad news that an ex-cadet from A' Company had recently been injured in Afghanistan. During the service the cadets were given the honour of parading the Normandy Veterans Banner and the Burma Star Banner on behalf of the Veterans, as well as our own 'A' Company Banner.

Following the Church Service the Company reformed and marched back to the Barracks. The salute was taken by Captain Tony Bloor MBE, 'A' Company's Cadet Administrative Assistant who is retiring in December this year following 24 years service.

Major Ian Walton, Officer Commanding A Company said "I would like to take this opportunity to thank Northamptonshire Police for their support during the Parade, as well as all the friends and families of our cadets and members of the public who turned out to support us with such enthusiasm throughout the day. My thanks also to the Officers,  Adult Instructors and especially the cadets for a Parade we can all be justifiably proud of. Well done A Company, we remembered them with pride".
